Community relations in Belfast
Belfast is probably one of the best places in the UK and Ireland to be a student – it is small enough so one can feel at home and large enough for one to feel they are living in a city.
South Belfast is one of the most popular districts for students to live, particularly the Holyland area as it is close to entertainment and night-life. Bars, pubs and clubs attract people from all over Northern Ireland. The area offers a large stock of privately rented accommodation too.
In recent years the high ratio of students to local residents has given rise to some difficulties for both groups, which the University of Ulster has been keen to address. The University employs a full-time Community Relations Officer who attends meetings of local resident groups and works closely with Belfast City Council, Police Service of Northern Ireland, the Northern Ireland Housing Executive and couterparts at Queen's University Belfast. The Community Relations Officer’s role also involves designing a programme of work to raise awareness among students and to develop relationships between students and residents. The Community Relations Officer can mediate between students and residents, if, and when, problems arise.
Student Charter and anti-social behaviour
All University of Ulster students are representatives of the University both on and off campus and they carry the good name and reputation of the University wherever they go. Students have a duty under the University’s Student Charter to behave responsibly both on and off campus. A joint letter to all students from the Vice-Chancellor and Students' Union President has been sent to all students. To read the letter please click on the link below:
Don’t gamble on your future
As a student you are investing time, money and energy in getting your degree so you can't afford to waste it. University life is full of challenges and excitement but good conduct on the part of all members of the University community is essential for the wellbeing and safety of others and for the maintenance of an environment in which students and staff can work and study effectively.
